The days have been shorter, the nights are longer, and the weather is getting crisper; all of this can only mean one thing: fall is here and winter is coming (ugh!).
I have a love/hate relationship with the fall: I hate the dropping temperatures, but I love the fashion! The changing of the seasons brings out the best in everyone when it comes to clothing choices. There’s nothing easier or more savvy than sporting your favorite chunky sweater, a pair of jeans, and those worn-in boots you love so much.
Just about everyone looks great in the fall, but the key to staying on top of the trends is taking the normal and turning it up a notch. Here are a few tips that will spice up your wardrobe, instead of your having to buy a new one. But if you’re like me and buying new clothes is just second nature, then in that case, revamp the old and enjoy the new!
All about the layers
A classic sweater is your best friend when the temperature drops. Usually, when I find a sweater I really love, I buy it in every basic color: black, brown, tan, and navy. You will never wear out a good sweater. Spend the extra bucks for one that’s made with durable fabrics. My favorite sweaters, which I’ve worn and washed multiple times, are from Express, Banana Republic, and American Eagle, all of which are reasonably priced. When you want to spice up your sweater collection, add layers! This is both practical (because it’s cold outside!) and trendy. So put on a chunky sweater and pair it with a great vest and scarf. A lighter sweater is fabulous with a jean jacket and colored pants. Leg warmers aren’t a thing of the past either, so layer a pair under boots that are the same color as your sweater. Also, don’t be afraid to buy one or two stylish patterned sweaters in different textures.
Leather and Fur (Faux!)
I love both of these items! With everything!
Of course, I am sticking to faux fur options only. I recently got a few pieces that were relatively inexpensive, and they have become statement items in my closet. A fur wrap or scarf is a great piece. I picked up a scarf that just pops over your head at Express last year, and I wear it with everything. Another great item to have is a faux fur vest; this will add flair to any outfit. I usually wear it with a plain long-sleeve tee underneath, jeans, and a great boot or heel if I’m going out on the town.
Here are some classic leather must-have pieces: a good leather jacket for the not-too-chilly part of the fall; classy leather leggings (I prefer the ones with leather patches as opposed to all leather everywhere);and a dress that incorporates leather, such as a leather trimmed edge, for example. It’s not always easy to pull off the leather look: too much will make you look like a rock goddess wannabe. If that’s what you’re going for, then by all means, wear it all over. But, I prefer to tone the rest of my wardrobe down when I rock the leather goods. Use one of those chunky sweaters again, with your leather leggings and heeled boots for a knockout look!
Fall and colors go hand in hand. There are certain colors in my wardrobe I take out completely in the fall and winter months, and reserve them only for spring and summer. Light blue, bright yellow, fluorescent pink, and mint to name a few. Stick to warm color palettes in the cold weather months to avoid feeling washed out. I love tan and brown in the fall with a pop of orange or red. Black, of course, will always make you feel sleek and sexy, and never disappoints.
When it comes to boots, you must always have a great cognac color in your closet. My favorite boots I wear almost every day are this color and literally go with everything. I also think an everyday black boot is a must!
Lastly, the recommended color of the season that you should grab in all your must-have fall items – scarves, hats, gloves, shoes, sweaters – is Boudreaux, also known as Wine. I’m obsessed
If you aren’t a big fan of the fall season, like me, then you might not be looking forward to the change in weather, or what it brings. But at least we can love the fashion! And besides your sexy look, the fall also means that the holiday season is approaching, and who doesn’t love that time of year?!
