How can I make an impact? How can I leave an impression on America so they’ll always remember me? These are the questions that were going through the mind of Katrina Darrell when she auditioned for the 8th season of American Idol in 2009.
Darrell has a beautiful singing voice, but she knew that most of her competition could deliver vocally. She had one chance to make a lasting impression. So, to stand out, the 20-year-old starlet walked onto the stage in a stunning bikini, capturing the attention of the judges and the millions of viewers across the country.Katrina Darrellwent through to Hollywood, and became affectionately known as “Bikini Girl.”
Darrell’s bodygot her recognized all over the globe. And now, five years later, she has managed to remain incredibly fit. How does she do it? We were thinking the same thing, so I caught up with Darrell in this exclusive Vicissitude Magazine interview to find out how she maintains her famous figure.
Darrell’s primary formula for fitness: a LOT of cardio. She runsboth indoors and outdoors, and she’s even competed in half marathons. In addition, Darrell partakes in plenty of classes offered at her gym.
To complement the cardio, Darrell also has a strict weight lifting routine.
Darrell never has the luxury that the rest of us do to let herself go and hide behind a sweatshirt. As a bikini model, and now the designer of her own bikini line, her fitness is linked to her livelihood. I asked Darrell how this pressure affects her mentally.
“I think a big part of staying fit is diet and persistence,” Darrell said. “With any job in entertainment — sure, you feel a little more pressure than the average young woman who is not in the public eye. You have to stay camera/swimsuit ready all the time. You can either let that pressure defeat you, or you can let it push you. I choose the latter.”
Darrell went on to discuss what she does on a daily basis to keep up on the nutrition side of her goals.
“I love protein shakes — a lean muscle protein powder. I prefer vanilla!” she said. “I mix the shakes with an organic peanut butter, and some ice and milk. I use this shake as my meal replacement, and I also use BCAA [Branched-Chain Amino Acids]as my pre/post workout supplement; that helps me promote lean muscle. I try to have at least one protein shake and one salad a day, which leaves me room for a fantastic dinner – preferably a protein and veggie – trying to stay away from carbs and starches as much as possible.”
In spite of her strict regimen, Darrell admits that she shares a vice with many Americans: “Soda is my biggest challenge. My addiction!”
But besides an occasional carbonated beverage, does the Bikini Girl cheat?
“I have never really been big on eating a huge amount for one meal or in one sitting, but I do recommend a cheat day, during which you indulge all day long – as long as you’re still somewhere around the 3000 calorie a day intake goal,” said Darrell, before adding with a smile, “On my cheat days, I have plenty of soda!”
Darrell’s calculated fitness and nutrition program proves that her always-summer-ready figure is not an accident. To be in bikini shape, it takes constant work.
We decided to have a little fun and ask Darrell what Ryan Seacrest was like behind the scenes. She smiled and responded, “Ryan Seacrest is an amazing kisser with great abs, both on and off camera!”
