From an early age, Levi Bond Jr. has made a point of being fashionably different.
Born to two entrepreneurs – his mother owning her own daycare and his father owning a furniture business – Bond seemed predestined to make his own path. As a child, he rebelled against the mainstream fashion, having the courage to wear things other kids didn’t.
“I’ve always loved clothes,” said Bond. “But as a kid growing up in Brooklyn, New York, I noticed everyone had to have the latest thing. I didn’t want to limit myself to Jordans. I didn’t need to have the most expensive item or the latest trend. I wanted what looked the best, and that wasn’t always the most expensive shoe on the rack.”
Fast forward to today, Bond now owns his own fashion company, LeJuBon, which specializes in men’s and women’s neckties, and operates under the same philosophy he had as a kid when he made his sartorial choices: the most expensive item isn’t necessarily the hottest item! Bond’s stand-out pieces feature eye-catching colors and are adorned with jewels, chains, and denim.
Bond describes his neckties as “bold.” Just do yourself a favor: don’t call them “cool” in his presence.
“A lot of people say my ties are cool, and whereas I appreciate the sentiment that they mean behind it, that’s just not for me,” said Bond. “Cool is so generic; it doesn’t begin to describe the dedication that I put into my product.”
“Innovation” is putting it lightly, especially considering this young talent started his business in his basement a few years ago before being featured in his first fashion show in October of 2012 on New York City runways.
Bond admits that he loves the “futuristic” look that Kanye West sports, particularly when it comes to sneakers. He pulls inspiration from that type of fashion and uses it when he is designing. He is also inspired by another famous designer – Ralph Lauren – not only for his fashion sense, but also because of his background.
“Ralph Lauren is my role model, because he also started out selling neckties. And now look at him. I started working in my basement, and now I’ve come a long way, but when I look at what Ralph Lauren has accomplished, having started with the same background at me, it gives me inspiration that one day I’ll achieve those heights. In fact, I have no doubt that day will come. It’s just a matter of time.”….
